“If you can measure it you can manage it”
This phrase is the inspiration behind helping people manage, track, and plan their overall health. Many things can affect someone's health such as diet, sleep, exercise, stress levels, and environment. My goal was to understand how people measure and track their overall day-to-day health including how they track and manage their blood test results.
Objectives & Goals
Help users track the food they eat and show them how that food affects their body.
Allow users to see the progress they make as they advance toward their health goals.
Give users the tools they need to read and understand their basic metabolic panels.
Research & Observations
Tracking Food
Users attempt to keep food diary but fails shortly after starting.
Desires to add healthy food into diet but doesn’t know what is best.
Always forgetting to take supplements or medications.
It is difficult to know what food is best for digestion.
I want to eat healthy, but I don’t want that to affect my relationship with food
Metabolic Panels
Users do not understand the data provided on metabolic panel.
Users like using online doctor portals for viewing health records.
Users do not use the metabolic data to make healthier choices.
Keeping track of metabolic panels is not easy.
User Persona
Healthy Kelsey
34, Event Planner
About
Kelsey is an Event Planner who lives in Indianapolis. She has been event planning for about 10 years catering to various private clients and companies around the Indianapolis area.
She always tries to eat healthy by keeping a balanced diet with vegetables, fruits and protein. She does have certain dietary restrictions, which makes it difficult to know what foods she can eat. Recently, she has been limiting meat from her diet which has made her feel better about her digestion.
Frustrations
Unsure what foods she should eat that will provide her body the proper nutrients while allowing for her dietary restrictions.
She has difficulties gaining access, reading, and understanding her basic metabolic panel.
Not being well informed about her health.
User Flow
Constructing the framework of the application was a critical part of the design process. Using these user flows as a guide allowed for a higher level of thought out sketches.
Ideation & Sketching
Using the data I collected from my research and interviews, I created many different sketches keeping usability in mind and thinking about what the interface could look.
Key Screens
Health Dashboard
Graph to show glucose level.
Easy access buttons to navigate to features.
Tab bar to also navigate to features.
Meal Plan
Meals are divided to 3 a day.
Use the drop down icon to open meals and get details.
Add a meal or open existing meal and add to that.
Metabolic Panel
Each metric shows the level.
Drop down icon shows the information of each metric.
Low and high on the graph indicates to the user.
Guerilla Usability Testing
Testing on actual potential users gave light to many defects and issues in my design.
Testing Insights
Testers were overwhelmed by the amount of option that were available on the home screen.
Testers did not notice the add (+) symbol on the tab bar. They did not understand how to add to the data into each particular location.
The testers found it difficult to understand the meal plan section and how they were to complete each meal and mark it as done.
Wireframing
The project really started to come alive during the wireframing phase. Using what I learned from the testing and all of my other research, I constructed a digital wireframe which I then turned into a working prototype. The working prototype allowed me to see where my design lacked in usability.
Mood Board & Style Guide
Solution Overview
Higher Health works with a 3rd party continuous glucose monitor (CGM) which sends glucose readings and other data wirelessly via NFC technology. The CGM typically stays on the users arm for 14 days.
Health Dashboard
The dashboard gives users easy access to glucose level graph, metabolic score, and other health tracking widgets.
Food Diary
In addition to the meal plan, the user is also able to keep a food diary of other items they eat that are not on the menu.
Meal Plan
Higher Health uses the data from the CGM to determine what food the user should and shouldn’t eat.
The user is given a list of suggested meals based on their dietary restrictions, metabolic goals, and personal preferences.
Metabolic Panel
After uploading new blood test results, the user is able to see where they need to make changes to their health habits.
